6Your sins will catch you,
but everyone who lives right
will sing and celebrate.
7The wicked don't care
about the rights of the poor,
but good people do.
8Sneering at others is a spark
that sets a city on fire;
using good sense can put out
the flames of anger.
Reflect
Tucked at the end of a now familiar litany calling for justice and a right attitude to the poor is a piercing metaphor about people who sneer (or mock or scoff) at others (v 8).
We know that wildfires destroy vast tracts of land and can engulf villages and towns, razing property and incinerating possessions. It comes as no surprise when, after forensic investigation, the experts point to a single, small incendiary spark as the cause. But, too late, the damage is done.
In life, the incendiary spark can be as innocent as the word but. “I’m not one to gossip but …”; “I’m no homophobe but …”; “They meant well but …”. People who affirm and pass on the but fan the flameFast forward maybe a thousand years and the apostle James picks up the same wildfire metaphor we find in Proverbs but this time in relation to Christians and the Church (James 3:5-6). The message is simple. If you are a believer you really ought not to spread evil about people who are made in the image of God just like you. And James’ antidote? Bless them instead and you’ll find you have a metaphorical fire extinguisher at your disposal (James 3:9-10 ESV).
Respond
Lord God, Forgive me when I say things that put people down rather than build them up. Remind me when I’m about to say something unhelpful to bite my lip. Help me to see that you love them and me regardless. Amen.
