Read
22 From the beginning,
I was with the Lord.
I was there before he began
23to create the earth.
At the very first,
the Lord gave life to me.
24When I was born,
there were no oceans
or springs of water.
25My birth was before
mountains were formed
or hills were put in place.
26It happened long before God
had made the earth
or any of its fields
or even the dust.
27 I was there when the Lord
put the heavens in place
and stretched the sky
over the surface of the sea.
28I was with him when he placed
the clouds in the sky
and created the springs
that fill the ocean.
29I was there when he set
boundaries for the sea
to make it obey him,
and when he laid foundations
to support the earth.
30I was right beside the Lord,
helping him plan and build.
I made him happy each day,
and I was happy at his side.
31I was pleased with his world
and pleased with its people.
Reflect
When purchasing a house, you need to go to the basement and look at the foundation. This is especially true when houses are old. I have seen more than one basement which was crumbling. Such a house should probably not be purchased.
The absence of wisdom in our life is like those crumbling basements. Wisdom is the foundation that we build on. It is most important. Its presence determines the outcomes of our lives in every area.
Wisdom was there in the invisible world before anything else! Long before clouds, trees and coffee shops – ultimately before you. It is foundational. God meant for it to be foundational in every relationship and task of our lives. Not just on weekdays or Sundays, but every moment of each day. It was first and is intended by God to maintain that position in everything.
You cannot navigate life effectively without wisdom, though many try. God made you and I for wisdom.
Left to ourselves, we are anemic in the wisdom department. It is not natural to us or inherent in our nature. 2 Timothy 3:15 tells us that we find wisdom in the Scriptures. It has its source in God. Yet we can gain wisdom if we embrace with a heart of obedience the truths that we find in Scripture.
Obedience is key when it comes to wisdom. Biblical wisdom is not an intellectual thing. It is to be pursued through carefully reading the Scriptures and then intentionally putting them into practice. It does not come to us while napping with the Bible on our chest, hoping these truths will melt into us. It shows up in a changed life that is lived humbly and which avoids things like envy and selfish ambition (James 3:13-18).
Respond
Heavenly Father, you are the embodiment of wisdom. Your wisdom is above all. Thank you that your wisdom is available for me. I choose to seek it out. Teach me the truths from your Word which I need to hear and obey today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
