Living Faith Amid Faithlessness Psalms Reflection

Read

(For the music leader. Use with stringed instruments. A special psalm that David wrote when the people of Ziph went to Saul and said, “David is hiding here with us.”)

Trusting God in Times of Trouble

1 Save me, God, by your power

and prove that I am right.

2Listen to my prayer

and hear what I say.

3Cruel strangers have attacked

and want me dead.

Not one of them cares

about you.

4You will help me, Lord God,

and keep me from falling;

5you will punish my enemies

for their evil deeds.

Be my faithful friend

and destroy them.

6I will bring a gift

and offer a sacrifice

to you, Lord.

I will praise your name

because you are good.

7You have rescued me

from all my troubles,

and my own eyes have seen

my enemies fall.

Reflect

I’ve learned through the years that not everybody can be trusted with my heart. Not everyone can handle my innermost thoughts. I have also learned, the hard way, that not everyone has a right to them. I have learned the wisdom of being quick to forgive, slow to trust and even slower to entrust.

As a new believer in Christ, I wrongly assumed that I could trust everyone. I’ll never forget the day that I lost my innocence: blown away, disillusioned, and betrayed by those who called themselves brothers and sisters in Christ.

It is sad, but true, that we live in a faithless, unfaithful society where few can be trusted. But maybe that’s the point. Scripture is clear that we should not put our trust in man. Rather we are to put our trust in God alone.

Like many of us, David lived and learned the hard way. He had survived target practice in the palace. Now we find him facing the inevitability of his destruction. Worse yet, these “cruel strangers” were men of Judah – his own! He should have been able to trust them. However, under the fearful leadership and pagan influence of Saul, they were faithless men with no regard for God. So what else could he expect? What else should we expect?

It is no wonder that David finds his refuge and confidence solely in God. He knew better than to entrust himself to faithless men. Such is his confidence in God that he speaks of his deliverance as if it’s a done deal. He believed in God’s promises and knew he could trust Him as a faithful friend. As a result, David promised that, when given the opportunity, he would express his appreciation for God’s faithfulness in his life. We ought to do the same

Respond

Lord God, You are worthy to be praised. Help me to look to you when I am disappointed or disillusioned by those around me. Thank you that I can trust in you. Thank you for your faithfulness. Thank you for your promises. My confidence is in you alone. Amen
