Maintaining A Healthy Diet

Proverbs Reflection

“From the fruit of his mouth a man’s stomach is filled” is how one version expresses the first part of verse 20.

What a fascinating and counter-intuitive thought! We might normally expect that our bellies are filled by what goes into them, not by what comes out – that what we say is the product, or fruit, of ideas and influences we have ingested. And, of course, that is true enough, but these two sayings playfully flip the obvious idea on its head.

Unadulterated Pleasure

Old Testament Reflection

Someone has said of this book that “We don’t blush at things we should, and we blush at things we shouldn’t.”

It struck me as I was thinking about this book how little we know of unadulterated pleasure. The world and all that God created is good, yet we have corrupted everything with sin, especially sex. We are surrounded with portrayals of sex defiled.

Identity Crisis

New Testament Reflection

At times Jesus buries truth in a familiar metaphor or situation, relying on the Holy Spirit to interpret for those who have ears to hear. Bread is a handy metaphor with an audience thoroughly familiar with the Feast of Unleavened Bread (Exodus 12:17), the tabernacle showbread (Exodus 25:30) and manna in the desert. Here Jesus appropriates the symbol of manna by claiming to be “the bread that had come down from heaven.”

Dainties and Delight

Proverbs Reflection

We live in a prestige obsessed culture. Popularity and power dominate from high school hallways to reality TV. The daily news and our political processes are saturated contests of prestige. Sports figures, movie stars, politicians, TV commentators are the daily focus. Even in the grocery store checkout line the magazine racks push food and fame.

You Are What You Eat

With respect to eating healthy foods, there is a slogan, “You are what you eat”. It stresses how what we intake into our bodies affects our physical wellbeing. The same can be applied to our spiritual wellbeing. Feeding moral or spiritual trash into our lives, does negatively influence how we live.
