The Joy of Discovery

Old Testament Reflection

As he moves closer to his uncle Laban’s territory near Haran, Jacob’s heart and mind are filled with the blessing of his father and the promise from his encounter with God. He arrives at a well, covered by a large stone. In a manner very similar to how his grandfather Abraham’s servant had been divinely directed to meet Rebekah so she could be Isaac’s wife, so Jacob arrives at a well where God has a divine appointment arranged.

The Danger of Isolation

Proverbs Reflection

In these verses, Solomon develops one of the earliest Bible themes, the basic human need for companionship. In Genesis 1 and 2, Moses described God’s creation of the world, starting with the lowest forms of life and moving to the creation of “a man in God’s own image.” (Genesis 1:26). Immediately thereafter God comments about the nature of humans: “It is not good for a man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18). It is a simple statement but establishes a central principle about human existence in God’s world.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall…

Old Testament Reflection

A person’s true character is often most evident when under great pressure.

The looming Philistine battle sent King Saul into great distress. A king who is supposed to be confident, heroic in nature, superior in stature and domineering, is now falling apart and full of fear.

In disobedience to what the Old Testament teaches, Saul seeks out a medium for guidance about his future instead of waiting on the Lord for answers.

Clasped in Christ’s Hand

New Testament Reflection

It isn’t often that I tell myself or others, ‘I am confident that I am walking in the centre of God’s will for my life.’ Usually I am struggling to navigate the dead ends, the crossroads and the painfully long stretches of road with no street markers whatsoever. Most of my prayers could be summarized as, ‘Lord, could you be a little clearer?’

Where Does Your Help Come From?

Although it was once their place of captivity, the people of Israel still looked often to Egypt for help and protection. Yet Isaiah tells us that swift judgment is coming to Egypt. The Lord himself will come “riding on a cloud” to punish them.

Just as Israel sought help from Egypt, the Egyptians will turn to various sources for wisdom and guidance.

How Will You Respond?

Read Reflect We all have the tendency to be distracted; to get distraught over the situations we find ourselves in every day. It’s our nature to worry, and thus to seek resolution (sometimes on our own) regardless of what our faith and/or trust in God might tell us. However, the example found in the story […]

God’s Got This

I remember the first time I heard the phrase, “All truth is God’s Truth.” It hit me with a myriad of implications. Any time I heard something that rang true, it was connected ultimately to God. Here we hear that not only does wisdom come from the Lord, but even “common sense.”
