Someone once reminded me that the most important part of a gravestone is the dash that comes between the year someone was born and the year they died. That dash represents everything that happened over the course of that person’s life. Unfortunately, most people don’t stop to think about their legacy until long after their legacy has already been determined in the minds of the people around them.

As I get older, I realize how important it is to tell my grandchildren the story of my journey with God and have them hear of the times when God has intervened, supported, challenged, encouraged, disciplined, and cared for me.
It is especially important for them to understand God’s unconditional love and faithfulness in the lives of ordinary people.

As I write this two of my dear friends are facing life-threatening cancer. It was sobering to travel to their home cities so that for just an hour or so we could be in each other’s presence, share meaningful words and embraces and experience the comfort of God’s presence and Word together. One of the passages I shared with both of these men and their spouses was Proverbs 21:21 ““He who pursues righteousness and loyalty finds life, righteousness and honor.” (NAS)

Recently, I had one of those spiritual Aha! moments . . . I was the guest preacher at a Christian community on Lake Michigan where my family owns a cottage. My grandparents were strong Christians who began going there in 1938. It is a place where my mom’s faith was formed and shaped by my grandmother’s, who eventually passed it on to me.
