If today’s reading sounds like a familiar story, it’s because it is. Abram and Sarai repeat Adam and Eve’s story… and make all the same mistakes!

Please, Jesus, Hurry!

We often feel the lack of time – to prepare for exams, finish projects, pay off our debts, or take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The man in the story faced the reality of running out of time. He had just learned that his little daughter had died and hoped that if Jesus hurried back with him, they might arrive in time for Jesus to revive her.

Our earthly knowledge just does not cut it. Human reason and wisdom along cannot reveal the secrets of God’s purpose for our lives. It requires process, patience and perseverance to understand God’s ways with us.
I am astounded at Joseph’s tenacity.

We’ve changed how we share our lives and indeed what we share. Social media makes it easy for us to chronicle the minutiae (“Eggs for breakfast!”) and milestones (‘It’s a boy!”) of our stories in real time. Skype and smartphones have fueled political revolutions.
But what of our stories must we remember? And what do we do with them?

This story amazes me. In Acts 13:22 Paul describes David as “a man after God’s own heart” and here we see why. The man who wrote “The Lord is my shepherd” had learned in his life leading the sheep that he was in turn led by God. But it is one thing to say this, and quite another to put it into practice. Especially in times of stress.

“It’s wise to be patient and show what you are like by forgiving others” (v 11).
Among these five verses which seem to have little connection with one another, we find this gem. The English Standard Version reads “Good sense makes one slow to anger.” These words are rich in meaning. I can imagine someone being “patient” while gritting their teeth, checking their watch (or iPhone).

Stephen rehearses the story of Moses, the person whom God used to shape Israel into a nation and lead them out of Egypt. Again God’s interventions are instrumental in advancing his plans.
We discover that Moses was forty years old (v 23) when he made an explicit attempt to become Israel’s leader and “give salvation to them” (v 23).

Read Reflect Really, I don’t even remember exactly when I first heard these words but what I cannot forget is the manner in which they pierced my soul: “when others are in the wrong we demand justice but when we are wrong we seek mercy.” How true!
