Three Steps

Proverbs Reflection

A lot of things seem to come in three’s. My favourite series of books is a threesome. When things break down in our home it always seems that three things go all at the same time. I can’t seem to sneeze only once or twice. It’s a proven fact that our minds are tuned to remember things that are grouped in triplicate.

Do You Remember?

Psalms Reflection

We’ve changed how we share our lives and indeed what we share. Social media makes it easy for us to chronicle the minutiae (“Eggs for breakfast!”) and milestones (‘It’s a boy!”) of our stories in real time. Skype and smartphones have fueled political revolutions.

But what of our stories must we remember? And what do we do with them?

From Fear to Faith

Old Testament Reflection

Being human, we are often “me centered” and we tend to forget really important things. When this forgetfulness moves us away from God, we need to find ways to remember.

The Lord did not want Israel to ever forget that he, the Lord of salvation, delivered them from slavery in Egypt. God delivering Israel was like God taking his own son out of Egypt. Literally, we see this in God sparing the firstborn sons of Israel on the night of Passover

Remember and Take Courage

Old Testament Reflection

Fear and trepidation walk closely behind every person called to a new work for God, much of it due to a concern about how what we hope to give to God will be received, and perceived, by others. The people of Israel were poor followers, so much so that they pushed their former leader Moses to the edge of despair. Yet, God had chosen them and promised them a land where they would prosper and where eventually they would bring forth the promised Saviour; and God would deliver on this promise.

Last Words from a Faithful Servant

Old Testament Reflection

Peace has come to the land and while much is left to be done, the old warrior and leader, Joshua is tired and ready to pass on. These are his last words, spoken deeply and powerfully by a leader who loves his people, but unfortunately also knows them. He knows they have short memories and he is aware that they have a tendency to want to rebel and choose other gods. He is already observing things in their lives that concern him. So, as any good leader on his way out would, he calls them together for one last hopeful call to be faithful and his words are helpful for us as well.

This Is It

New Testament Reflection

How do you wait when the promise of hope and healing you’d nurtured for months and years has died?

The women who had cared – literally – for Jesus had seen him die. They’d watched Joseph and Nicodemus take his battered body down, wrap it in fine cloth, gently place it in Joseph’s tomb.

Remember and Pay Attention

I can recall sitting in my high school Chemistry class and hearing the pleading voice of my teacher asking us as students to remember the basic principles of molecular Chemistry and to pay attention to the formulas that we had learned. And if I had done so with a little more diligence, I might have done better in the class.
