God our Fortress

Psalms Reflection

Psalm 91 is a psalm of confidence and trust. Its words have provided comfort to untold numbers of believers for thousands of years.

“Live under the protection of God Most High and stay in the shadow of God All-Powerful,” the psalm opens, “Then you will say to the LORD, ‘You are my fortress, my place of safety; you are my God, and I trust you.’” It is a beautiful statement, one full of promise.

Living Under the Influence

Psalms Reflection

David was a man after God’s own heart. He was a faithful follower of God. He was true to his calling. He held no contempt toward those who threatened his life, and yet we know that he was not perfect. He knew it too. He was, after all, human like us. He knew his weaknesses, his vulnerabilities and his sinful nature. He knew how easy it was to say something he shouldn’t. He especially knew the power of influence. Do you?

Peace in the Night

Psalms Reflection

Nighttime can be difficult time for many people. At night we are more susceptible to anxieties and worries. Some suffer insomnia because of the unbearable weight of burdens. Others wake up in the middle of the night finding themselves in a vicious fight with fearful thoughts. The night can confront us with threats that scare us or situations that overwhelm us. We must fight with these anxious thoughts on our own or trust the Lord to come to our rescue.

Ultimate Safety

Proverbs Reflection

The towers we are most familiar with are office buildings that soar much higher than any biblical writer could have imagined – and are not, as we have seen to our sorrow, strongholds of safety.

But dotted here and there along the St. Lawrence River and the eastern seaboard of Canada and the United States are a handful of squat, round military towers made of stone.

You Matter

Psalms Reflection

I like to read obituaries. It may seem morbid, but it’s a rather fascinating glimpse into lives so recently vibrant, now gone silent. Just a few hundred words to sum up lifetimes of love and loss and heartache and hope.

“We humans are only a breath,” the psalmist intones, “none of us are truly great.

Overcoming Gangs

Proverbs Reflection

Gangs are part of the landscape in most major urban areas. Why do young people join them? I have read of two significant factors, though there are probably more. One reason is for safety. In an insecure neighbourhood, a gang can provide a type of protection: “If you hurt me, ten other tough guys will take care of you.” If we are afraid, gang solidarity can comfort us.

What Praise Should Look Like

Old Testament Reflection

As you read Chapter 25, did you find yourself smiling? I sure did.

After all of the prophecies of doom and being confronted with the consequences of sin, it’s refreshing to see Isaiah’s words of praise.

God Sees and Hears

Read Reflect God did not wake up in a panic this morning, climb out of his cloud bed, and peer down at the earth with sleepy eyes and cry out “Oh my goodness, I forgot all about my people”. God did not have to crank up the volume on speakers connected to his satellite to […]

Celebrate

Read Reflect Celebrate! Shout unto the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously! There is somebody by your side. Not just any old person, but the Lord, the King of Israel. The one who conquered death and hell is standing by your side. God will protect you from the fiery darts of the evil one. There […]

Be Encouraged!

Read Reflect These few verses almost sound like a mix between a plea and a bargain being made between the psalmist and God – and the desperation expressed is by no means foreign to us. Most of us can identify at least one time, if not a few dozen, when we’ve felt the same need […]
