Much Better to be Wise

New Testament Reflection

The proverb “when the cat’s away, the mice will play” is not a Biblical proverb, but it is still true. The point is that human nature being what it is, when there is no fear of getting caught, people tend to take advantage of the situation for their own pleasure and gain.

Jesus understood this principle, and speaks to it in a parable he tells about being prepared for his return.

Desperate without God

David was desperate. Few of us will ever be in the same place as David with enemies surrounding him in an effort to defeat him or even take his life, but we can identify with the feeling of being desperate when we are in the midst of tragedy, illness or emotional pain. When we know we are no longer in control, we know the feeling of being vulnerable – of not being self-sufficient.

Last Things

In eight brief verses, chapter 15 sets the stage for the final drama, the pouring out of the seven bowls of God’s judgment (plagues, chapter 16). The term “last” (15:1) is “eschatos” in Greek and the basis of the word eschatology, the study of the “last things.”
