We often feel the lack of time – to prepare for exams, finish projects, pay off our debts, or take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The man in the story faced the reality of running out of time. He had just learned that his little daughter had died and hoped that if Jesus hurried back with him, they might arrive in time for Jesus to revive her.

Somehow, in the last 2,000 years, the church lost its sense of urgency. Not many of us live like we have the pressing agenda outlined in today’s passage. Jesus’ words seem so strange. Maybe they belong in the past.

Yet, it’s a theme throughout the New Testament that time is short for spreading the gospel. It’s not just in this passage.

Be ready!

The average response time after an emergency call is eight minutes or less. We are hardwired to respond quickly when danger is imminent. The same attention to urgency ought to be heeded in the spiritual realm as it is in the physical.

‘Indeed, the “right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation’ (2:6a NLT).
