Proverbs Reflection

We meet in this passage two types of people who are in trouble. One is a lazy couch potato who never gets around to achieving much of anything. Then there’s the dream chaser who is going nowhere fast.

There are days when frankly, I just lack motivation.

Deceivers Among Us

Proverbs Reflection

No one likes to be deceived. Deceivers come in all forms; to your front door, in your mailbox, computer. . . and sometimes at the end of your pew. I have been scammed on at least one occasion that I will admit to. My weakness—I am too nice.

Jesus calls us to love all people, doesn’t He?

Stuff that Grosses Out God

Proverbs Reflection

It is not every day that we stop and wonder just what grosses God out. The writer of Proverbs spells it out very clearly in these verses.

While the writer gives to us a whole list of seven things to consider, I was challenged by the first thing God hates—“haughty eyes”.

Nice Eyes, Nice Words . . . No Thank You!

Proverbs Reflection

Walking through a forest in the dead of night on a narrow path requires a good flashlight shining out in front. Pointing the light behind me is useless. I liken this picture to heeding the instruction of godly parents.

Vitamins for the Soul

Proverbs Reflection

I confess that there are days I chose to pick up my spy novel rather than sit and read my Bible. Surely there is someone who shares my guilt! Clearly wisdom and understanding of any real value is pretty scarce in that kind of morning reading! Yet in this passage we are challenged to embrace wisdom and understanding as we would a dear sister and or friend.

Perilous Preoccupation

Proverbs Reflection

I wish the peril was down the street or around the corner from our homes. Those days are long gone. Now, it is as close as the computer you are sitting at or the phone in your son’s or daughter’s pocket.

It is deeply disturbing to see the growing trend in our society.

Heeding a lonely voice

Proverbs Reflection

Ever feel like your voice is not heard? Do you feel that other voices crowd yours out, interrupting and speaking over yours? It’s not a nice feeling.

That is the experience of the voice of wisdom; God’s voice personified for us here. He calls out, raising his voice wherever people are, in the public squares and where their paths meet.

The Anatomy of Wisdom

Proverbs Reflection

There is a saying, “Eat dessert when it’s worth the calories!” Wisdom is just like that decadent dessert, only it’s always worth it.

It is important to know the anatomy of wisdom; this passage of Scripture lays it out for us. We are told what it looks like and what it doesn’t. If the words coming out of our mouth ring of arrogance or boasting, wisdom is absent.

First things First

Proverbs Reflection

When purchasing a house, you need to go to the basement and look at the foundation. This is especially true when houses are old. I have seen more than one basement which was crumbling. Such a house should probably not be purchased.

The absence of wisdom in our life is like those crumbling basements.

Wisdom as a Verb

Proverbs Reflection

Years ago my husband learned to wind surf. The instructor spoke for twenty minutes. Most of the people that surrounded the instructor had no patience to listen. They wanted to get out there and just do it. My husband is the patient sort. He listened, then went out and sailed like an expert. I watched as the others fell constantly off their boards into the lake. I am reminded of wisdom and its daily call to us to instruct us in all aspects of our lives.
