Perilous Preoccupation

Proverbs Reflection

I wish the peril was down the street or around the corner from our homes. Those days are long gone. Now, it is as close as the computer you are sitting at or the phone in your son’s or daughter’s pocket.

It is deeply disturbing to see the growing trend in our society.

Merciful God

Psalms Reflection

David was a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22), but he was a man who also followed after the “lusts of his flesh,” or as we would say, bodily appetites and sexual desire. Psalm 51 is David’s confession after he committed adultery with Bathsheba and was confronted by Nathan the prophet (see 2 Samuel 11:1- 12:25).

Sex in Paradise

Old Testament Reflection

First question: What are your feelings about coming to the Song of Solomon? Second (related) question: What is a book so unapologetically all about sex doing in the Bible?

From the beginning of the Christian era, the Song of Solomon has been read as an allegory of Christ and the church and is commonly read this way still today.

Unadulterated Pleasure

Old Testament Reflection

Someone has said of this book that “We don’t blush at things we should, and we blush at things we shouldn’t.”

It struck me as I was thinking about this book how little we know of unadulterated pleasure. The world and all that God created is good, yet we have corrupted everything with sin, especially sex. We are surrounded with portrayals of sex defiled.

Sexual “Freedom” is not so Free

Proverbs Reflection

In the mountains a blocked highway can mean a massive detour. If someone closed one of these roads on a whim, many would be justifiably angry. If, however, the closure was necessitated by a washed out bridge, the decision represents a legitimate concern to save lives. The first decision intends to deprive us; the second one intends our well-being.

Wholly Holy

Read Reflect Uh uh. We tend to draw back when people start to tell us what to do, especially in the realms of inter-personal conduct and sexual behaviour. It’s all very well to believe in Jesus and love God, to go to church and say the occasional prayer, but…there’s more? We have to do something […]

Made For Intimacy

Read Reflect The Greco-Roman world, like ours, was full of sexual adventurism and the confusion and destruction to which it leads. Already within the Corinthian church we’ve seen a kind of triumphant incest, and participation in religious prostitution; no wonder some were wondering if it was better just to do away with sex altogether. But […]
