God Is Wonderful
1Save me, Lord God!
Hurry and help.
2Disappoint and confuse
all who want to kill me.
Turn away and disgrace
all who want to hurt me.
3Embarrass and shame those
who say, “We told you so!”
4Let your worshipers celebrate
and be glad because of you.
They love your saving power,
so let them always say,
“God is wonderful!”
5I am poor and needy,
but you, the Lord God,
care about me.
You are the one who saves me.
Please hurry and help!
Reflect
There are times in life when we feel pressed into a corner with no way out. That was the experience of the people of Israel with the Red Sea in front and Pharaoh’s army behind. In those moments there is only one thing to do; scream for help! In Psalm 70 David is pressed by his enemies. His life is hanging by a thread. He needs God’s help, now! David cries to God to rescue him (v 1), to turn the tables on his enemies (vv 2-3), to bless the faithful (v 4) and finally to save him in his needy state (v 5).
Perhaps you have been in the place where a cry of desperation was all you could utter. I have. I needed divine aid and no one else could save the day. In those moments we look not to our own resources but to him alone. In those moments we cry out in faith to Jesus and that faith honours him. No matter what is closing in on us, our God is greater still.
Trials shake our self-reliance and drive us to our knees at the foot of the cross. That is a blessed place to be; not comfortable, but one that finds the comforting grace of God. In Matthew 5:3, Jesus promised, “God blesses those people who depend only on him.”
As you pray, know that you are heard by the One who saves. As you struggle with your enemies, know the Lord will deal with them in justice. As you cry out for God, know that his ways and timing are perfect.
Respond
Lord Jesus our faithful deliverer, hear us and save us. Rescue us quickly. Hold us steady. Don’t delay. We will praise you in the storm and wait for your salvation. Amen.
