The Lord Will Protect
1I look to the hills!
Where will I find help?
2It will come from the Lord,
who created heaven and earth.
3The Lord is your protector,
and he won't go to sleep
or let you stumble.
4The protector of Israel
doesn't doze
or ever get drowsy.
5The Lord is your protector,
there at your right side
to shade you from the sun.
6You won't be harmed
by the sun during the day
or by the moon at night.
7The Lord will protect you
and keep you safe
from all dangers.
8The Lord will protect you
now and always
wherever you go.
Reflect
Where do you go for help? Your doctor? Your counselor? Your massage therapist? Your hairdresser? Your pastor? Your spouse? Your friends? A self-help book or magazine subscription? There is no shortage of help available out there.
David knew that his help ultimately came from the Lord. He knew God as his protector; whether it was out in the field watching sheep, facing the “giants” in his life, in the presence of a spear-throwing King, or as he went to battle. And he knew that help was available 24/7!
I find it assuring, as David did, that the One who created the heavens and the earth watches out for me. He works the night shift! He doesn’t sleep, doze or even get drowsy! There is no fee. No appointment necessary. He is available to protect me now and always wherever I go. And He even calls for reinforcements to join Him as He works around the clock!
Fellow believers have often told me that God has awakened them in the middle of the night just so they could pray for my family and I.
I have a friend who is regularly awakened in the middle of the night by, what she thinks is, the phone or doorbell. When she comes to and realizes it was neither, she rises from her bed and gets on her knees. She has grown to hear and respond to the Lord’s prompting to pray any time of day or night. Not unlike Samuel in 1 Samuel 3.
There is not a minute that goes by when God is not thinking of us. He is ready to rise to our defense at any given moment. He watches our comings and goings. There is nowhere we go that He is not with us (Psalm 139:7-10).
Respond
Lord God, Maker of heaven and earth, Thank you that I can come to you for help. Thank you for being ever available to me. Thank you for the many ways you protect and watch over me night and day. Thank you for your presence both now and forevermore. Amen
