The Plight of Fools

Psalms Reflection

The psalmist here is not writing about the person who denies the existence of God. That would have been unheard of in ancient Israel. But there were, then as now, plenty of people who went about their everyday lives as if God could not see what they were doing. The Hebrew word for that kind of person is “nabal” and a man of that name died for his refusal to give food to David when he needed it (1 Sam 25).

Jesus said, “You can tell what they are by what they do. No one picks grapes or figs from thorn bushes. A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit.” (Matthew 7:16-17) These proverbs make a similar point. Some people ask just anyone for input when they face a quandary. The quality of advice they receive, however, can vary immensely.

Words of Wisdom

In this social media age where memes are king, how many times a day do you see a graphic on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram of a proverbial quote against the backdrop of a sunset or a forest or a river, etc., etc.? Without casting any judgment on those who post these pictures, do you ever find yourself wondering if the person posting the quote actually abides by it, or even fully understands it?
