I know a lot of people who others characterize as lazy: homeless men and women, who sit on the sidewalk and beg. But they’re not actually lazy – they spend more hours each day just trying to survive than most people do at their jobs. And if you think panhandling is easy, just try squatting on the concrete with your hat out until you have enough to buy food, pay the rent, clothe yourself and so on.

With Eyes Wide Open

The first of these proverbs reminds us of the intimate connection between character and action. This connection shows up even in the life of a child. If we are to discern this link we need to pay careful attention. We need to be wise in how we hear and what we see. For it is in hearing and seeing that we are able to come to understanding. The great temptation is to fail to listen, fail to look and so fail to understand aright.

None of us likes to be accused of being lazy. We like to assume that we have worked for and deserve everything good we have received! Our reading today reminds me that there are some attitudes and actions that accompany laziness that may be more common in my life than I would like to admit. One is the propensity to make excuses.
