No Peace or Rest – Only Troubles and Worries

Old Testament Reflection

When Job finally breaks the silence, it’s with a cry of anguish directed at God, his creator. Why was I born? Why can’t I die?

Job has lost his peace. He accepted the loss of all his possessions and even his family with an amazing calmness but now he lashes out. His passionate outburst is common to those who suffer deeply—whether physical, emotional or spiritual.

Give Me a Chance – Let Me Speak

Old Testament Reflection

“Look, I’ve heard enough from you guys: you’re hopeless, useless and wrong. And I’m not going to waste any more words on you.”

“There is someone I want to talk to, though; and that’s God. So give me a chance; you guys shut up. And let me speak to God.”

Submitting to God

Old Testament Reflection

The reality of doubt surfaces in two of the Gospel stories about Jesus. Both John and Matthew include the record of doubting disciples as they set down the story of Jesus and his disciples.

Evidence Required

New Testament Reflection

It often seems to me that Thomas has two strikes against him. First of all, he wasn’t actually with the other disciples when Jesus appears to them after his resurrection. Secondly, he wasn’t one to cover up his doubts. He spoke them out loud.

“Show me the evidence,” he says to his friends when they excitedly tell him they have seen Jesus, that their Lord was truly alive.

Asking Tough Questions

Who do you go to with your tough questions? In a “Google” search world, there are many options, but we don’t like the uncertainty while we wait for answers.
