Promises Kept

Psalms Reflection

“But you promised!” My daughter wailed those accusing words and stomped from the room. My heart sank. She was right. I had promised, and to her it looked like the fulfillment of that promise would never happen. It wasn’t until she had grown and matured that she realized I had kept my promise to her that day. It just took a while for her to see how.

Our Hearts Pour Forth

Psalms Reflection

I stared at the small card on the breakfast tray and laughed out loud. I had just given birth to my first child and my heart felt like it might burst. And there, in black and white, was the cry of my heart: Psalm 103: “Praise the Lord O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.”

How could I do anything else?

Recounting the Miracles

Psalms Reflection

“Where would we be now?” my husband asked.

I shook my head. We had just spoken to a group of people, giving our “testimony” about how we came to be believers in Christ. It’s a true story of his incredible grace and mercy, a testimony of miracles worked and lives changed.

It’s Only Right

Psalms Reflection

“What a lovely ring,” my friend said.

I nodded. “My daughter gave it to me,” I said.

My response was immediate and came naturally.

The God Who Hears

Psalms Reflection

I was sitting in a truck parked at a look-out spot above the Stewart River valley in the Yukon. My mind and spirit were in turmoil. I’d been trying to make life work on my own terms but had only succeeded in making myself miserable. The circumstances had come to a point of desperation and in desperation I began talking to God, even though I had convinced myself he did not exist.

A Simple Common Denominator

Psalms Reflection

Sometimes life is reduced to the simplest of common denominators.

For instance, there was this day – a long grey day in a long grey week, week six of chemotherapy. The new drug they had said would be easier wasn’t. It knocked me to the ground and stomped on me until every bone ached. I was seriously thinking about cancelling the next dose. I just didn’t think I could do it.

Dancing in Humility

Psalms Reflection

“Confidence properly placed.” That’s a great definition of humility. In Psalm 118 David’s humility is inspiring. It is a picture of a man not bowed down to the ground like a worm, but leaping into the air, rejoicing before the altar of God. We can almost see him dancing through the streets of Jerusalem as he cries out for all of Israel to acknowledge that God’s love endures forever while he acknowledges that it was God who has given him the victory over his enemies.

A Matter of Focus

Psalms Reflection

There is so much wickedness in our world that sometimes it can overwhelm us and we begin to worry. We see evil men succeed and wonder if God is aware of it. We watch terrible things happen to innocent people and we wonder why God does not act. All the “what ifs” build in our minds and create ulcers in our stomachs. Dwelling on all that is negative and evil will do that to you.

A Simple Choice

Psalms Reflection

I sat in my car and cried out to God. I was about to walk into a grade four classroom and was supposed to teach them about Jesus, but my heart wasn’t in it. In fact my heart was very far from being able to do it. I had just spent a sleepless night worrying about a situation in our family. The circumstances were dire and I saw no solution in sight.

Good News in a Wicked Place

Psalms Reflection

The world is a wicked place and evil men run rampant. All we have to do is listen to the news broadcasts about events around the world, or look around in our own communities to know that statement is true. In fact, that statement has always been true, from the day Adam and Eve chose to trust the serpent instead of God and opened the way for sin to enter the world. Throughout history it has seemed that God does not see, does not hear, does not care.
